Lasmid urges greater appreciation for Ghanaian DJs

Originally reported by MyJoyOnline (Kwame Dadzie)

Ghanaian musician Lasmid has highlighted the need for increased recognition of disc jockeys and their impact on the country’s music scene. In a post on X, he praised DJs for shaping his own career, noting that they have helped artists feel larger, extended the reach of songs and provided the soundtrack to everyday life.

Lasmid argued that the contribution of DJs is often taken for granted and urged stakeholders to engage in a genuine discussion about their importance. “I just think it’s time we had a real conversation about how much DJs mean to Ghanaian music and how much more they deserve,” he wrote.

His comments come amid debate over the relevance of traditional media and DJs compared with new media platforms and influencers, which some claim now play a bigger role in music promotion. The Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, organised by Merqury Republic, continues to acknowledge DJ contributions, having honoured practitioners across the industry for the past decade.

Lasmid’s call seeks to reaffirm the value of DJs in the evolving music landscape and to ensure their efforts receive appropriate acknowledgement.
